Mountains Climbed: Marshall
Date of Hike: 7/24/2010

Trail Conditions: Started from Upper Works with my usual hiking buddy, trail was excellent and dry for first 2 miles. More and more mud after that, especially between Flowed Lands and Herbert Brook. Lots of mud all the way to the top of Marshall via the Herbert Brook herd trail. Beautiful day, thanks for the weather forecast Mr. Ted Letcher!

Comments: First time at Upper Works, great trail, not overly crowded like the trails from Heart Lake. Got off track one time after I missed cairn to cross the brook. Tried to keep pushing through in hopes to find the path but never did! We ended up somewhere close to the top after 40 minutes, but could not get past the blowdown. After a little panic, we headed back down, caught up with the brook again, and found the herd trail (RELIEF!), then proceeded up. Made for an interesting day, more cuts and bruises than anticipated though.

Special Equipment Required: Gaiters would have been very nice to have.

''The Herd Trail''

And the trail rolled to the right,or was it the left?!
and the mud was still apparent,
But we pressed on
the trip was worth the toil!'' looncry2

Nice Job on Marshall. With its false summits it can be a confusing mountain. With the nice day on Saturday,Iroquois had to look awesome. Ed

Yes, Iroquois was very impressive. This hike was probably the prettiest I have experienced. The Upper Works trail into Flowed Lands is outstanding, and then Flowed Lands itself is a great spot to just sit and relax, looking out over the water. The trail up Marshall is unique with literally everything being covered in moss near the water.

I highly recommend Marshall to those who have not experienced it.
