Mountains Climbed: Mt. Colden Date of Hike: 3/6/10
Trail Conditions: The trail was very hard packed from the Loj to the dam and even past there until we reached the turnoff to Lake Arnold. This was fortunats since I broke the binding on one of my snowshoes(MSR lightning ascents) as we were crossing Marcy Dam. I bare-booted until we reached the trail junction where we turned off to head up towards Lake Arnold. At this point the trail, while still well broken and pretty well packed down, got a little softer so I made an impromptu repair on my binding using some of the 5/50 parachute cord I always carry. The trail remained well packed and easy to follow all of the way to the summit. I probably would have had an easier time if I just strapped my snowshoes on my pack and wore my microspikes all the way, but I didn't want to risk the wrath of a ranger so I stuck it out with my semi-functioning snowshoes. Comments: Other than my snowshoe troubles it was a fantastic trip. The fact that I was up there with my girlfriend to help her celebrate the finish of her winter-46 on such an incredible day will mark this as one of the high points in my hiking career. Even the broken bindings, the loss of half of a brand new trekking pole, and the obnoxious comments of one hiker we passed about not wearing snowshoes could not diminish the incredible day we had on this fantastic mountain!
Congradulations Laura!

Hey Mike thanks for the report and I would like to second the Congratulations to Laura for her winter 46. Nice going. I had to laugh about the about the comment from the other climber as I remember the time my nephew and I were walking out the Lake road after doing three summits and the road was as hard as poured concrete and some lady wanted to know why we were barebooting our way out. We just told her after snowshoeing fourteen miles it was nice to walk in boots. My nephew and I still remind each other about that woman and her comment as she was snowshoeing in dime store snow shoes that wouldn;t have got her up a snow bank. Ed
